Woman lost in balloon crash lived life 'to help people'

Friends say Mary Martinez operated “behind the scenes.”
For years, she held numerous fundraisers and quietly touched the lives of countless women across Albuquerque by helping them get into shape and being by their side in trying times.

“She was such a presence in all our lives,” friend Melanie Tidman said. “And I’m talking hundreds of women, this isn’t a small group.”

But little was said of the 59-year-old after she, her husband Martin, their friends Susan and John Montoya, and pilot Nick Meleski were killed in a balloon crash last weekend on the West Side. ....

Faithful readers of this column will recall the story of little Donna Lee Vigil, who was 3 when she survived a near-drowning in the Santa Fe River on May 5, 1958, because of the heroism of Glen Malin, a 44-year-old World War II Navy veteran.
Malin, a “shy hero” as the Santa Fe New Mexican called him, had not been one to talk about his gallantry. That day at the river he had jumped into the water, scooped up the lifeless child and began resuscitation efforts.

When others arrived to help, he slipped away before anybody could get his name. His identity might have never been known had his boss not contacted the newspaper for what became a front-page story. ....

Newhall Woman Left Partially Paralyzed By Attempted Murder Attack On Road To Recovery
Left partially paralyzed from being stabbed several times by her brother-in-law, Erika “Bird” Martinez surpassed doctors’ expectations by taking her first steps since the incident this week, only two days before her perpetrator’s arraignment on Wednesday.
Martinez and her husband were stabbed repeatedly by her brother-in-law in an altercation in November 2020, but her road to recovery suggests that partial paralysis may not be a permanent obstacle.

ROWLAND, N.C. (WMBF) - A K-9 officer in North Carolina received a generous gift from a nonprofit.
The Rowland Police Department said Friday that K-9 officer Siga was brand-new body armor courtesy of the organization, Vested Interest in K-9′s, Inc.
Officials said the vest was embroidered with the message, “In Honor of the Martinez Family.” ....
