The Lima Mall is providing the community with many different ways to celebrate the fresh start of a new school year.

The Lima Mall is holding a Teacher Appreciation Night from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 29 where educators can enjoy teacher-exclusive promotions and discounts at retail spaces, including Books-A-Million, Buckle, and more. The first 50 teachers with school identification will receive a goody bag with coupons and other items. Teachers will also be given the chance to enjoy bingo with the opportunity to win prizes such as gift cards and classroom items. Teacher Appreciation Night will take place in Center Court. ....

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. Rock Island s Arts Commission is looking for the public s input on what they want to see in the coming years.
On Wednesday, June 2, the commission held a meeting at Schwiebert Riverfront Park to discuss their plans in an open forum. 
Leaders with the commission say every four or five years they like to get feedback and ideas to refine their mission.   One member said that could include things like expanding online resources and public events.
I think we just want to know what our focus should be, times have definitely changed in the last year or so and how can we help artists get back into the swing of things, said Amber Williams.  ....

Prominent Black Americans expressed relief after white former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murdering George Floyd, but warned that police reform, and justice for other victims of police brutality, are still necessary.
While Chauvin was found guilty of all the charges he faced – second- and third-degree murder, and manslaughter – by the jury in Minneapolis, the families of other Black Americans killed by police in recent years have yet to see their killers jailed, or even face a jury. ....

Now for some better news: 9 Australians fighting for gender equality and making a difference


There is hope
Many women are understandably feeling traumatised, triggered, overwhelmed and exhausted. And it would be easy to think it is all bad news and nothing is changing.
But there is hope. As a result of what’s emerged, we’ve seen an outpouring of rage from people around Australia who are fed up with the way we treat women and victim-survivors. As an organiser of the recent March 4 Justice rally in Canberra, I saw firsthand the collective anger and frustration directed at federal parliament and wider society and the thirst for change.
I’m also taking heart from the many Australians some household names, some less well-known who are fighting for change and making a difference to gender equality. Here are just nine. ....
