Diageo builds weir to aid biodiversity
2nd February, 2021 by Owen Bellwood
Johnnie Walker owner Diageo invested £550,000 (US$752,000) in the construction of a weir to increase the sustainability of fish stocks in the river Dullan.
The weir on the river Dullan will improve upstream biodiversity
Diageo and the Spey Fishery Board collaborated on the construction of the weir on the river Dullan, part of the river Spey catchment, which is crucial to the Scotch whisky industry.
The project, which has taken three and a half years to design and construct, replaces a damaged weir. It is hoped the new weir will improve upstream biodiversity and increase the opportunity for spawning trout and salmon in the river. ....

Why Brexit Is Poised To Unbottle Whisky Profits Galore! [Daily Mail, London]
Jan. 24 INVESTORS could warm up their portfolios with a wee dram as rare Scotch prices soar on the back of the Brexit deal. The United States imposed a 25 per cent tax on single malt Scotch imports a couple of years ago punishment for the EU subsidising aircraft maker Airbus.
It led to the price of some of the most collectable bottles of whisky falling by about ten per cent. Yet prices have started to rise again.
Whisky broker Rare Whisky 101 has put together an RW Apex 1000 index that tracks the collective price performance of the 1,000 most sought-after whiskies. ....

There are also some new whiskies from the High Coast Distillery in Sweden. We’ve actually had whisky from the distillery before, which used to trade under the name BOX. The BOX whiskies were good, but 500ml bottles and very expensive. The new range is all 700mls, and the prices are a lot better. The whiskies are also getting good reviews, and I can’t wait to try them.
I’ve also left our newest whisky and rum arrivals from Cadenheads, which were in the last Malt Messenger, up for browsing. They are a great value, and I thought they might tempt you to join us for Cameron’s tasting! ....

Weather conditions deteriorating on many Sask. highways

Highways around Saskatchewan were getting treacherous late Monday.
The Highway Hotline put a “Travel Not Recommended” advisory on the Trans-Canada Highway, stretching from just east of Regina all the way to Saskatchewan Landing just east of Swift Current.
That stretch of highway was covered in ice, with drifting snow, packed-in snow and reduced visibility. The eastbound lanes were closed on Highway 1 from Rush Lake to Mortlach because of jackknifed semis.
Another major road where travel is not recommended is Highway 11 from Regina to Dundurn.
The same advisory applies to many roads in the same area, including Highway 6 north of Regina to Southey and south of the city to the 306 junction, Highway 33 southeast of Regina to Kronau, highways 2 and 301 near Moose Jaw, Highway 63 for 43 kilometres southwest of Moose Jaw, Highway 19 from Hodgeville to the Trans-Canada junction and Highway 363 near Hodgeville and Neidpath. ....
