In Focus: Retelling the History of Indigenous People

The power of literature to address the history of the oppression of Indigenous peoples in North America and chart their futures has never been more important. As the U.S. experiences a wave of popular concern about social justice issues, publishers are really just beginning to embrace a growing number of works on such topics as ancestral domains and land rights of Indigenous communities; preservation of their languages, traditions, rituals, and cultural knowledge; and, just as important, the reimagining of their lives through the storytelling of contemporary Indigenous authors.

Penguins took a walk through the Sunken Garden at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory.
The pandemic has caused the lights to been dimmed for months at many of the state s cultural and historical attractions. But since early January, when the Gov. Tim Walz loosened COVID restrictions, some venues have reopened or are in the process of doing so.
The Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Walker Art Center and the American Swedish Institute have recently reopened and the Weisman Art Museum is opening next week. However, the Science Museum of Minnesota and Bell Museum of Natural History are holding out until spring. ....

Through art and children s books, Marlena Myles illuminates old stories for generations to come.

Artist Marlena Myles spent her teenage years in Rapid City, S.D., but unlike peers who swooned about crushes and went to sports practice, she went to the library and learned all she could about Russian history.
Being Native in America, in school you learn a history that does not apply to you, said Myles, who is Mohegan, Muscokee Creek and a member of Spirit Lake Dakota.
She discovered similarities between the way the Russian and U.S. governments treated Native people, and became fascinated by the different classes of Russian people along with their need for Alaskan Natives for their own survival. ....
