(WAFF) - Scottsboro City Schools is planning ahead to fight against learning loss caused by the pandemic. Scottsboro City Schools is getting a $1.7 million boost from the Alabama Department of Education via the Alabama Literacy Act. Superintendent Jose Reyes said the money will fund the program for three years for students in K-3rd grade. “It is certainly Dr. Mackey’s vision for us as local school superintendents to focus the majority of that money on the learning loss and we will also use some of that money for air quality measures and heating and air conditioning units.,” said Reyes. ....

Financial data for local governments show that across Minnesota, cities and counties have been planning to keep their budgets as stable as possible and control spending, the Minnesota Office of the State Auditor said last week. It’s a pattern that holds up for Lyon County and the city of Marshall, local officials said. The pandemic and its effects on businesses and taxpayers were some of the uncertainties local governments faced this year. “I think when we adopted the budget for 2021, we definitely had that in mind,” said Lyon County Administrator Loren Stomberg. The farm economy wasn’t looking great at the beginning of the year, and Lyon County commissioners were also clear about not wanting large levy increases, Stomberg said. ....

TYLER, Texas â State Senator Bob Hall has filed a bill to allow licensed adults to conceal carry weapons on public schools and some charter school campuses. Hall says Senate Bill 514 is an extension of the open carry law which passed in 2015 for college campuses. The idea is that there will be people there, that anybody thinking about going to school to do harm to our kids will now know that there s a good chance that there may be one or more people there that are prepared to defend themselves, Hall said. So, that will discourage them. Under the bill, teachers, parents as well as students 18 and older with a license to carry (LTC) would be able to conceal carry their weapons on a public school or open-enrollment charter school campus. ....
