Buyers were again active as the New Zealand sharemarket took a lead from positive offshore bourses to post more than one per cent gain – representing a rise of nearly two per cent in two
trading days.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 index hit all-time highs this week, the London FTSE 100 Index was up 0.9 per cent overnight, the Hong Kong and China market were ahead, and the Australian S&P/ASX 200 Index was up 0.89 per cent to 6900 points at 5.45pm (NZ time). ....

A special stopwork meeting over worker safety at the Ports of Auckland is likely this week as a senior Auckland councillor says the council has been a lazy hands-off owner of the country s main imports

The New Zealand sharemarket gave back much of its gains from the day before, falling more than half a per cent on steady trading as it entered the four-day Easter break.
The S&P/NZX 50 Index
fell 72.38 points or 0.58 per cent to 12,488.31, after rising 0.92 per cent on Wednesday. The index picked up in late trading, beforehand reaching an intraday low of 12,439.41.
There were 63 gainers and 74 decliners over the whole market, with 43.46 million shares worth $165.38 million changing hands. ....

Port of Tauranga mid-year profit up despite rough waters

Port of Tauranga turned in a mid-year 2.3 per cent increase in group net profit after tax, despite volatile cargo volumes and fallout from supply chain congestion and severe ship delays at Auckland.
Group net profit after tax for the first six months of the 2021 financial year to December was $49.4 million, achieved despite a 1.3 per cent decrease in total trade volumes to 13.1m tonnes.
Revenue was $159.5m, up 3 per cent on the same previous period, due to higher income from the container terminal and a 22.3 per cent rise in the earnings of subsidiaries and associate companies. ....
