One year after the Covid-19 pandemic was declared a public health emergency by Gov. Chris Sununu, the rental market in New Hampshire will receives another dose of government assistance on March 15. But even with new relief on the way, the creation of affordable housing remains a pressing issue.
The latest round of assistance $20 million – comes from a stimulus bill passed in January that dedicated $25 billion to the states. ....

COVID-19 Rental Assistance Program launches March 15 in New Hampshire

One year after the Covid-19 pandemic was declared to be a public health emergency by Gov. Sununu, the rental market in New Hampshire will be receiving another dose of government assistance on March 15. But even with new relief on the way, the creation of affordable housing remains a pressing issue for the state. 
The latest round of rental assistance comes from a stimulus bill passed in Jan. that dedicated $25 billion to the states. The money is part of the Coronavirus Relief Fund, run by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. ....

Freeman Toth has the weighty job of finding people before it is too late.  
As one of two homeless outreach and housing stability coordinators for the Community Action Program of Belknap-Merrimack Counties, Toth combs the woods, encampments, parks and gazebos, shelters, soup kitchens and cars. He looks for people who have no consistent place to sleep or to escape life-threatening weather. Late last year he discovered a young man passed out on railroad tracks in freezing temperatures. ....

Nearly a year into the pandemic, New Hampshire officials are seeing more people accessing its Doorway, a program that connects people to treatment and resources for substance abuse disorders, including those suffering from alcohol addiction.
In March, New Hampshire, like the rest of the nation, went into lockdown to combat COVID-19. Months later, people are still feeling the stress of social isolation.Sign up for our Newsletters
This isolation and stress that people are experiencing during the pandemic, especially the extended period of time, has had a significant impact on individual s mental health and on their substance use, said Stephanie Savard, of the Governor s Commission on Alcohol and Drugs. ....

The number of homeless people was already growing fast before the pandemic, and now the problem has grown larger than we know, experts say. In Manchester alone, the count of unsheltered homeless has more than doubled from July 1, with about 170, to over 480 as of Nov. 30.
Last month, the New Hampshire Coalition to End Homelessness (NHCEH) released its annual report on the state of homelessness. In addition to the point-in-time headcount they perform at the start of the year, the organization included data from a national database for the first time, which provides more detailed information about the individuals who don’t have a home, including demographic data that shows Black and Hispanic people repre ....
