Effort to get elected school board referendum on Roanoke ballot continues, with work to do

A Democratic activist still needs thousands of signatures to advance a proposed referendum on whether Roanoke should elect its school board.
But Luke Priddy said his petition drive has some support, including from a city council member, and is preparing to launch what Priddy hopes will be a more eye-catching phase of the effort.
âI have 500 yard signs that just arrived recently that are in my garage,â he said Thursday.
If he submits the signatures of 6,500 registered voters who live in the city by July 14, the referendum would appear on the Nov. 2 ballot. Heâs received about 500 so far, he said Thursday. ....

Roanoke bans guns on city property, will end gun shows at Berglund Center

Roanoke has banned guns from city-owned parks, libraries and offices as well as from municipal recreation centers and events in public spaces.
Gun shows eventually will be prohibited at the city-owned Berglund Center, though an event already under contract can go forward, specifically Saturdayâs Roanoke Valley Gun Show, City Attorney Tim Spencer said.
In addition, the gun prohibition will cover parades, political marches and similar gatherings that require an assembly permit to be held on city property or public rights-of-way, officials said. Some exceptions will apply.
The Roanoke City Council approved the guns ban in a 6-1 vote Monday, with Stephanie Moon-Reynolds voting no. Public comments before the vote appeared to lean in favor of seeing the city restrict guns at a time of spiking gun violence in some neighborhoods. ....

Gun shows will be banned from Roanoke, Virginia’s Berglund Center under a new ordinance approved by the city council on Monday. It’s the latest attack on legal gun owners as a result of a law approved by anti-gun Democrats in Richmond last year allowing localities to ban guns from public buildings and permitted gatherings. A number of cities and counties have taken advantage of their new authority to implement similar gun bans, but this is the first time that a city in Virginia has included gun shows on city property as a part of their ban. ....
