Opinion: Distance makes the heart grow fonder

In my youth, I travelled quite a bit. I grew up in rural Virginia, and then joined the Army. Uncle Sam gave me the opportunity to visit South Korea, Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, Germany and at least half a dozen states. I settled in Colorado Springs and put down roots. Iâve been here since 2005, and I have lived here longer than I have anywhere else. It is, definitively, home.

IndyÂ folks. The last time I was there, briefly, was probably 2004, when I visited a high school friend who lived there during leave from Iraq. LGBTQ+ people in Chicago are more at risk for certain health conditions but less likely to receive care.
The social inequality and stigma afflicting the LGBTQ+ and TGNC (transgender and gender non-conforming) populations in Chicago creates a health-care quandary; they’re more susceptible to issues such as HIV, cancer, and suicide, yet less likely to receive care.
Nationally, LGBT youth are two to three times more likely to attempt suicide, gay men are at higher risk for HIV and other STDs, and transgender individuals have a higher prevalence of mental health issues, HIV/STDs, suicide, and less access to health insurance, according to the CDC. ....

When the Black Lives Matter and other social justice uprisings hit Chicago last year, the creators at Soft Cage Films were ready. The nonprofit film production company has been documenting social change, combating oppressive systems, and amplifying underrepresented voices of color in film through experimental techniques, artistic collaboration, and engaging storylines since its founding in 2012.

Chicago has become a better home for Canada Geese than their natural habitat ever was. The world’s largest goose is twice as likely to survive in the city compared to the wild, according to a 2017 study. This is especially true during winter, hunting season in Illinois.
