District 27 District Attorney Jack Thorp called Tuesday s McGirt forum a waste of time.
District Attorney Jack Thorp said a forum with Gov. Kevin Stitt and a group of prosecutors to discuss the impact of the U.S. Supreme Court’s McGirt ruling was a waste of time, although conceptually, the idea was solid.
The forum, held Tuesday evening in the Cox Business Convention Center in Tulsa, drew criticism before it began. Participants said the event was designed to help victims of criminal cases affected by McGirt, and to discuss the ruling s impact on how criminals are prosecuted in the state. But tribal leaders were skeptical about the forum’s actual intent, with Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. reportedly calling it “an anti-McGirt rally for political reasons.” ....

News that a 75-year sentence for a notorious convicted murder from Cherokee County recently expired raised controversy, and District Attorney Jack Thorp provided a more in-depth explanation as to how that can happen.
Sentence expirations occur when an inmate has reached his maximum court sentence, minus credit for time served. Inmates are released without terms of community supervision.
Thorp said an expired sentence is a term of years that s been modified for parole eligibility. He said the expiration of lengthy sentences is not uncommon, since individuals don t want additional supervision upon release. ....
