Viterbi researchers make disease-fighting robot

A research team from the USC Viterbi School of Engineering has created a four-legged, semi-autonomous robot to help fight the spread of coronavirus. The robot has been named Legged Agile Smart Efficient Robot for Disinfection (LASER-D) and is able to move on a variety of terrain to sanitize surfaces with a chemical spray-based disinfectant. The machine was created as a research opportunity for master’s students, combining two previous systems: a disinfection robot and a quadruped robot. 
LASER-D can currently be controlled from a short distance away, with its vision system being overseen by an operator. The vision system serves as a way for operators to control movement while the robot is in development. New AI tool can thwart coronavirus mutations

USC researchers have developed a new method to counter emergent mutations of the coronavirus and hasten vaccine development to stop the pathogen responsible for killing thousands of people and ruining the economy.
Using artificial intelligence (AI), the research team at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering developed a method to speed the analysis of vaccines and zero in on the best potential preventive medical therapy.
The method is easily adaptable to analyze potential mutations of the virus, ensuring the best possible vaccines are quickly identified solutions that give humans a big advantage over the evolving contagion. Their machine-learning model can accomplish vaccine design cycles that once took months or years in a matter of seconds and minutes, the study says. ....

USC and Amazon establish Center for Secure and Trusted Machine Learning

USC and Amazon today announced they are creating a joint research center focused on development of new approaches to machine learning (ML) privacy, security, and trustworthiness. The Center for Secure and Trusted Machine Learning, which will be housed at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, will support USC and Amazon researchers in the development of novel approaches to privacy-preserving ML solutions.
The expectation is that the center will unleash a new line of fundamental research on privacy and security aspects of machine learning - a timely and critical effort given the proliferation of artificial intelligence across all aspects of society from education to finance, transportation, healthcare, and many others. ....
