Feb. 6 (UPI) Jim Weatherly the songwriter best known for writing Gladys Knight s Midnight Train to Georgia has died, a family friend told reporters.
Weatherly was 77 and died Wednesday of natural causes at his home in Brentwood, Tenn., near Nashville.

Weatherly was born in Mississippi and played on the University of Mississippi s football team in 1962 s undefeated season, when the team clinched a Southeastern Conference Championship and a national championship.
The following year, as starting quarterback, he led the Rebels to another SEC championship.
After graduating from college, Weatherly decided to pursue a career in music. ....

Jim Weatherly, a former star quarterback at the University of Mississippi who moved to Nashville and authored megahits such as Midnight Train to Georgia in a prolific career as a singer-songwriter, died at his home Wednesday, Music Row mogul and family friend Charlie Monk told the Tennessean. He was 77. 
The family attributed his death to natural causes, Monk said.
There will be a private service.   
Weatherly helped lead the Ole Miss football team to an undefeated season, an SEC championship and a national championship in 1962 one of three national championships claimed by the program. The Rebels repeated as SEC champions with Weatherly at quarterback in 1963. ....

Jim Weatherly, Pontotoc native and Hall of Fame songwriter, dies


TUPELO • Jim Weatherly was more than a songwriter to Gladys Knight. They were musical contemporaries who achieved success at the same time and whose careers paralleled each other.
Knight and her group, the Pips, rose to fame in the early 1970s by singing tunes written by Weatherly — especially the memorable “Midnight Train To Georgia.” She was among many who expressed her adoration for the Pontotoc native and celebrated songwriter, who passed away Wednesday.
“I’m missing Jim Weatherly already,” Knight wrote Thursday on Twitter. “He was about life and love. …. We were just made for each other. We grew our lives together. I’m gonna miss him terribly and love him always.” ....
