Comments sought on proposed Interim Administrator Program
The Michigan Supreme Court is seeking comments on a proposal from the State Bar of Michigan that would create a new Interim Administrator Program within the bar and impose new obligations on attorneys.
Under the proposal, attorneys in private practice would be required to nominate another attorney or law firm to serve as interim administrator if the nominating attorney becomes unable to practice. The bar would confirm the nomination with the named attorney, and that attorney would acknowledge agreement.
Alternatively, an attorney could pay an annual fee unspecified in the bar’s proposal to ensure that in the event of death or disability, the Bar would appoint an attorney to serve as interim administrator. ....

ALPENA An Alpena County court case will be used to set precedent in future state courts following a Michigan Court of Appeals decision, announced Friday.
The appeals court sided against Travis Johnson, who told the higher court he shouldn’t have to pay $1,200 in court costs assessed as part of his sentencing in 2017.
Unlike many other decisions by the appeals court, the Johnson decision was for publication, which means it will become part of the overall body of law in the state and can be cited by attorneys and judges in determining the outcome of other cases. ....

High court launches Justice For All Commission
The Michigan Supreme Court has created the Michigan Justice For All Commission to expand access to and enhance the quality of the civil legal justice system in Michigan.
The commission will lead the implementation of the JFA Task Force’s Strategic Plan that was released in December 2020. Its aim is to help people solve civil legal problems, such as landlord-tenant issues or family law disputes.

“All Michigan residents must have equal access to our courts and to resources needed to navigate our justice system, regardless of who they are, what they earn, or where they come from,” Chief Justice Bridget M. Retiring judge remembered for fairness, getting Michigan’s driver responsibility fees abolished

KENTWOOD, MI Looking back on his 42-year judicial career as Kentwood’s first district court judge, William Kelly thinks fondly of his father.
Kelly followed in the footsteps of his father, Joseph Kelly, who was a Kentwood municipal judge in the 1970s.
“The last time I had a conversation with my father, I told him I was trying to keep up the good name he established. He said that from what he heard, I had. That always meant a lot,” he said.
Kelly, 73, officially retired as Kentwood’s first and only district court judge on Jan. 1. ....
