Midland Innovation + Technology Charter School to break ground

MIDLAND The launch of a new public charter high school in Beaver County takes several leaps forward this week, as Midland Innovation + Technology Charter School (MITCS) announced it is receiving a major grant and two significant donations that will further its work.
On Monday, the Pennsylvania Coalition of Public Charter Schools (PCPCS) revealed MITCS as one of three sub-grantees who may receive as much as $1.5 million each through Pennsylvania’s Charter School Program (PACSP) Grant.
This award marks the inaugural year of the grant award that will support the development, expansion and replication of 18 high-quality public schools in Pennsylvania over a grant period of five years (2021-25). Each school will be a nonprofit, brick-and-mortar charter school with a model or track record demonstrating a strong likelihood of producing meaningful and sustainable student learning gains. ....

MIDLAND, Pa. The Midland Women’s Civic Club, along with its fund-raising arm, the Greater Midland Scholarship Foundation, is holding its annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration and commemoration at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be held virtually via Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.
Constitutional law professor and CNN contributor Michael Higginbotham will deliver the keynote address following this year’s theme; “Come Together: Only In Darkness Can You See The Stars.”
Higginbotham is a distinguished legal scholar and attorney who has taught at the University of Baltimore School of Law since 1988. He earned his undergrad degree at Brown University and law degrees from both Yale University and the University of Cambridge. As The Gap Between Students And Teachers Of Color Widens In PA, Black Families Demand Change

When Ashley Dawson was in first grade, she was one of only a few Black students at Walnut Street Elementary in Darby.
But in fifth grade, her teacher, principal and assistant principal at the Delaware County school were all Black women. It’s what inspired Dawson, who now works as a family involvement coordinator at a cyber charter, to pursue a career in education.
She was sitting in assembly when she first saw Principal Renee Musgrove and Assistant Principal Ivy Brown.
“There was something about them … I wanted to do what they did,” said Dawson. “Because they showed me what happens when you take the time and you really go outside the curriculum you work with the student and meet them where they’re at. Those women, they did that.” ....
