LONG BEACH, Calif. With violent smash-and-grab shoplifting costing California businesses millions of dollars annually, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law Wednesday aimed at curbing organized retail theft.
The law reestablishes the crime of organized retail theft, which lawmakers first created in 2018 but allowed to lapse as of July 1. Prosecutors can again seek to charge the crime as either a misdemeanor or a felony. It applies to those who work with others to steal merchandise either from brick-and-mortar stores or online, with the intent to sell or return the merchandise. ....

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — With violent smash-and-grab shoplifting costing California businesses millions of dollars annually, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law Wednesday aimed at curbing organized retail theft.
The law reestablishes the crime of organized retail theft, which lawmakers first created in 2018 but allowed to lapse as of July 1. Prosecutors can again seek to charge the crime as either a misdemeanor or a felony. It applies to those who work with others to steal merchandise either from brick-and-mortar stores or online, with the intent to sell or return the merchandise.
The legislation also applies to someone who works with others to receive stolen merchandise, those who steal for others as part of an organized theft ring or people who do the recruiting or organizing for the theft ring. ....

California Gov. Newsom signs bill to combat organized retail crime following brazen and violent thefts

CaliforniaGov. Newsom announced new efforts to crack down on a surge of retail thefts and other crimes Wednesday following a series of violent incidents involving shoplifters in recent months. 
Appearing with law enforcement officials and mayors from throughout the state at a small business in Long Beach, the Democratic governor signed a bill to create crime task forces around the California Highway Patrol and local agencies to address organized theft rings. 
The bill AB 331 also re-established organized retail theft as a crime, a designation which had lapsed on July 1. It also applies to those who work with thieves to steal or receive stolen merchandise and those who recruit or organize theft rings.  ....

Con la oleada de robos violentos en tiendas que cuesta a las empresas de California millones de dólares al año, el gobernador Gavin Newsom firmó una ley el miércoles destinada a frenar el robo minorista organizado.
La ley restablece el delito de robo minorista organizado, que los legisladores crearon por primera vez en 2018 pero que dejó de tener efecto a partir del 1 de julio. Los fiscales pueden volver a intentar acusar el delito de delito menor o mayor.
