BYGONES: First 'self service' petrol station

A NEW era dawned for motorists in 1968, as Great Western Motors’ opened its first ever ‘self-service’ petrol station in Wokingham Road.
Traditionally, most drivers would usually be served by a forecourt attendant, but by the mid 1970’s this had largely disappeared.
The process for actually pumping fuel was a bit involved, so the Chronicle helpfully explained the procedure: “Select a pump and press its red signal button, which alerts the central kiosk operator. After their visual check, the light will change to an amber colour, followed by a green “go ahead” flickering light.”
The new plans for a state-of the-art shopping centre at Crockenwell Road in Woodley, involving the demolition of council houses, were criticised with regard to the traffic problems it would ‘engender’. ....

After 30 years in the game, The Divine Comedy’s louche mastermind Neil Hannon has marked the occasion with a sumptuous re-mastered 12 CD box set:
Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time – Thirty Years of The Divine Comedy. For a man who claims he’’s not one for looking back, Hannon seems to have embraced the occasion, writing numerous liner notes for all the albums as well as sourcing demos and early versions of many classic songs.
Under the Radar caught up with him, and from his home in County Kildare, Ireland, he chatted about the box set, his career to date, his flirtation with mainstream pop superstardom…oh and that sitcom theme tune. ....

Kenneth Alwyn, who has died aged 95, was an orchestral conductor who appeared with the BBC Concert Orchestra on Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night for 30 years; he conducted the Japanese premiere of Holst’s The Planets, accompanied Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev dancing at the Bath Festival; and took over performances of Benjamin Britten’s ballet The Prince of the Pagodas from the composer after the work’s premiere in 1957. ....
