Martin High School Band Director Bobby Castro will serve as a presenter at the Organization of American Kodaly Educators National Conference./
At any given time, be it virtually or in person, you will always find Martin High School’s “La Banda del Animo” perfecting its skills.
It’s no surprise that behind every great award-winning band is a director leading them with pride and passion while diligently working on methods and techniques to instill in the students.
Martin High School band director Bobby Castro adds a method of singing into the use of instrument playing and musical visuals. This technique assists the students in becoming more musically inclined. Castro believes students can be better musicians by incorporating singing during their music rehearsals. The voice is one of the principles of the Music Kodaly Method. ....

Jackson State gets funding to boost STEM capabilities

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) Jackson State University is one of five schools to get a Scientific Leadership Award.
The schools described as minority-serving institutions will receive up to $2.8 million across five universities in 2021, WLBT-TV reported.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate made the announcement recently.
The purpose of the award is to establish Homeland Security-STEM-related courses and provide the necessary resources for students and faculty to solve challenges.
The other schools receiving the award: Texas A&M University – Kingsville; University of the District of Columbia; Tennessee State University; and University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley. ....

Valentin Jalomo, a legendary Astros superfan known for his whiskered mustache and infallible attendance record at home games, died Tuesday from COVID-19. He was 81.
Though a season ticketholder since 2007, Jalomo began attending games when the Astrodome opened in 1965, and later gained fame for his distinctive hairspray-styled facial hair, which stretched out on each side of his face in a pointed handlebar. He regularly appeared on television broadcasts, standing in the concourse beyond the left-center field wall at Minute Maid Park. ....
