Discrimination ban heats up Mesa Council meeting


That could change within two weeks, however.
While a Thursday morning study session showed City Council to be in unanimous agreement on implementing an ordinance to protect against discrimination based, there was passionate debate over the size of businesses that should be included.
According to the Human Rights Campaign’s website (hrc.org), 225 cities and counties “prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of gender identity in employment ordinances that governed all public and private employers in those jurisdictions.”
Four of those cities are in Arizona: Phoenix and Tucson, both larger than Mesa, and Tempe and Flagstaff, both many times smaller than Mesa.  ....

Lorene Morris Skousen — Mesa, Arizona
Our loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away February 7, 2021 peacefully in her home at the age of 95. Born on April 19, 1925, to Otho and Stella (Myers) Morris in Miami, Arizona, Lorene lived a long and full life, filled with love, service, and devotion to family.
Lorene met James N. Skousen at a dance she attended with her sister at the Mezona in Mesa, Arizona. She married her Jimmy June 26, 1947, in the Mesa, Arizona Temple.They celebrated their 69th anniversary four months before Jim’s passing in November 2016. They are the parents of six children. They lived in Provo, Utah; Queen Creek, Arizona; Yuma, Arizona; Rupert, Idaho; Ontario, Oregon; and Mesa, Arizona. Jim and Rene raised their family primarily in Ontario, Oregon. When asked if she had a favorite place to live she replied, “Wherever I was, was my favorite place.” ....

PHOENIX, Feb. 18, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) Mesa Air Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: MESA) today reported Mesa Airlines’ operating performance for January 2021.
Mesa Airlines reported 25,359 block hours in January 2021, a 33.8 percent drop from January 2020 as a result of reduced schedules during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company also reported a controllable completion factor of 99.96 percent and 100 percent for its American and United operations, respectively.
Operating statistics for January 2021 and fiscal year 2021 YTD are included in the table below. ....

Rent, utility assistance available now in Mesa


A new program is helping Mesa residents catch up on rent owed – and avoid water and electricity turnoffs.
Last month, after providing $7 million in rent assistance through the Mesa CARES program, the city received an additional $15.7 million in federal funding for “Mesa residents who are financially impacted by COVID.”
Two weeks into the 2021 Emergency Rental and Utility Assistance Program (or ERAP), 87 households received $452,000 in assistance, with $426,000 for rent owed and $25,000 for utility bills.
The city was processing nearly 700 more applications for ERAP, which is targeted for those who “demonstrate they have been impacted by COVID,” such as loss of a job and/or income reduction. ....
