BUDAPEST, April 27 (Reuters) - Hungarian scientists and doctors have warned against relying on numbers released by the government that suggested Russian and Chinese COVID-19 shots were more effective than Western ones, the latest twist in the country s unorthodox vaccine rollout.
Hungary is the only European Union country to authorise and deploy Russian and Chinese jabs before they have been approved by the EU drugs regulator, while Prime Minister Viktor Orban has cultivated strong ties with both Russia and China.
The government on Sunday said more than 5.5 times as many people fell ill with COVID-19 after receiving two Pfizer shots than recipients of Russia s Sputnik-V vaccine. The data contained no age, health record, or time specifications for the vaccine recipients. ....

MILAN, April 20 (Reuters) - A Milan court on Monday rejected a multibillion-euro damage request by Mediaset in a case stemming from the failed sale of the Italian broadcaster s pay-TV arm to French media giant Vivendi, a court document showed.
The decision represents the first verdict in the long-running dispute pitting former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, whose family controls Mediaset, against French billionaire Vincent Bollore, a leading investor in Vivendi.
Mediaset and Vivendi have been at loggerheads since 2016, when the French group ditched an accord to buy Mediaset s loss- making pay-TV unit and then built a 29% stake in the company, which the Italian group considers hostile and illegitimate. ....

LONDON, April 7 (Reuters) - Debt experts, charity groups and investors welcomed news on Wednesday that the world s poorest countries will get new IMF funds and COVID-19 debt relief, but they also cautioned that for some it would still only be a band-aid solution.
A new $650 billion allocation of the IMF s quasi currency known as Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) will provide over $20 billion of funding, while an extended repayment holiday on loans from rich G20 nations will temporarily save another $7 billion.
The $20 billion share of the SDR increase alone is more than all the emergency money the IMF provided in Africa https://www.imf.org/en/Topics/imf-and-covid19/COVID-Lending-Tracker last year and in relative terms, those under the most serious stress will receive the biggest benefit. ....

RPT-EXCLUSIVE-Germany to propose Beirut port reconstruction with 'strings attached' - sources

(Repeats April 1 article without changes)
PARIS/BERLIN, April 1 (Reuters) - Germany will next week present a multi-billion-dollar proposal to Lebanese authorities to rebuild the Port of Beirut as part of efforts to entice the country’s politicians to form a government capable of warding off financial collapse, two sources said.
A chemical explosion at the port last August killed 200 people, injured thousands and destroyed entire neighbourhoods in Lebanon’s capital, plunging the country deeper into its worst political and economic crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war.
According to two diplomatic sources with knowledge of the plans, Germany and France are vying to lead reconstruction efforts. Berlin will on April 7 outline a proposal that the European Investment Bank has agreed to help fund that would clear the area and reconstruct facilities, they said. ....
