Largemouth bass caught in Lake Elmo sets new Montana state record
A largemouth bass pulled from Lake Elmo in Billings Heights Saturday is big enough to be a new state record. The 9.575 lb. fish tops the previous record of 8.8 lb. that has stood since 2009.
Brandon Wright caught the 22.5-inch-long fish Saturday morning while angling from shore with a worm on a hook and 6-pound test line. He officially confirmed the fish’s species, weight and length by contacting Fish, Wildlife & Parks officials and weighing it on a certified scale at Alberstons grocery in Billings Heights.
Wright, who has lived in Billings for about four years, said he usually likes to flyfish, but decided Saturday to fish at Lake Elmo. He arrived at the lake at a little after 10 a.m. and tipped a #10 Eagle Claw hook with a piece of night crawler. Then, Wright said, he sat back and started watching Tik Tok videos on his cell phone. Lake Cascade produces another state record perch
Congratulations to Adam Mann of Mosinee, Wisconsin, on landing the latest record yellow perch from Lake Cascade. After being weighed locally on a certified scale and inspected by a Fish and Game biologist, Mann was awarded a new certified-weight state record for his 3.22-pound perch that was 16.25-inches long.
Mann landed the monster perch while ice fishing on Tuesday, March 9. As an avid ice-fisherman, Mann and several friends made the long trek to Idaho in search of trophy perch. Although fishing had not been hot that day, they had been finding a some large perch throughout the day. ....

North Carolina Channel Catfish State Record Broken
RALEIGH, N.C. – It took 50 years and one ounce to break the current state record for a channel catfish, but John Stone, of Pinehurst, now holds the new record after catching a 23-pound, 5-ounce catfish from a private pond in Moore County last September.
The previous record holder was E.J. Bowden, of Rocky Mount, who caught his record-breaking channel catfish back in 1970 while fishing City Lake with his then 5-year-old son Louis.
Stone, who is an at-large Wildlife Commissioner, caught his fish using cut bait. He had his fish weighed on certified scales at Tractor Supply in Biscoe. He was the third angler in 2020 to break a catfish state record. On July 5 last year, Joey Baird, of Lawrenceville, Va., caught a 121-pound, 9-ounce blue catfish from Lake Gaston. Fifteen days later, Pikeville angler Tyler Barnes caught a 78-pound, 14-ounce flathead catfish from the Neuse River. ....

In the spirit of more communication since most of you are working from home, here’s an internal-use-only e-newsletter. Lots of things cooking so this first-ever edition could be even longer, but in the spirit of brevity, we’re not going to cover everything in January. We’ll try and piece together some sort of newsletter every month going forward.
