With abundant biomass, US fishermen look to expand post-pandemic market for scup

Share
U.S. commercial scup, or porgy, landings peaked in 1981 at 21.73 million pounds, but dipped to 2.66 million pounds by 2000. In recent years, commercial fishermen have not landed the commercial quota, but there have been industry-wide efforts focused on closing the gap.
The commercial fishery runs year-round, and mostly in U.S. federal waters during the winter and state waters during the summer. A coastwide commercial quota is allocated between three quota periods: winter I, summer, and winter II. Total ex-vessel value in 2018 was USD 9.7 million (EUR 8 million), resulting in an average price per pound of USD 0.73 (EUR 0.60). NOAA data shows landings from October to the end of December 2020 are below last year’s landings. ....

Trump signs Young Fishermen's Development Act into law

Trump signs Young Fishermen s Development Act into law
President Donald Trump signed into law on Tuesday an act created to help young fishermen break into an industry that has seen increased barriers to entry and an aging workforce.
The Young Fishermen s Development Act will establish $2,000,000 in yearly grant funding to support educational and training programs for young individuals who want to get into commercial fishing. Organizations at the federal, state and local level are eligible for funding.
Sens. Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren were co-sponsors of the legislation.
“While our fishing industry is a vital and historic part of Massachusetts’ coastal economy, we cannot let it become lost to history,” said Markey in an official statement. “This valuable program will help more young people push off the dock into new careers in the fishing industry, powering the economy and our local communities.” ....

This fish lives by the shore but dives deep to spawn, breaking records

It’s not easy to catch bonefish. Wary of humans, these silvery fish nicknamed grey ghosts blend into the sandy flats where they forage and are quick to dart away.
Several species of the fish are found in shallow tropical waters worldwide. To capture one of these eluders, skilled fishers spend years learning how to mimic the movements of bonefish prey, such as shrimp, with their lures. “It’s an absolute art form,” says Matt Ajemian, a fisheries ecologist at Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. When they do take the bait, “these fish hit hard,” and put up a fight, Ajemian says. “They’re real juggernauts that s why people love them.” ....
