Facebook Launches New Push to Boost COVID-19 Vaccine Messaging Within Vulnerable Communities


As the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out continues to gain momentum, Facebook is looking to use its reach to promote vaccine information to the most impacted communities, with a specific focus on those that may have limited exposure to vaccine info.
First off, Facebook is donating $5 million to Go Give One, a COVID-19 fundraising campaign created by the World Health Organization Foundation.
As explained by Facebook:
The campaign calls on everyone to play their part in helping to vaccinate the world, with the money raised going to an international fund called COVAX (COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access). We’ll do this by donating the first $20 into Facebook Fundraisers created for the United Nations Foundation beginning April 28 in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Norway. ....

Hunger and poverty nonprofits drove massive growth experienced in online revenue for charities during 2020 as COVID-19 played a role in fundraising expansion across channels, whether it was online, email or social media.
Online revenue grew by 32% in 2020, including a 173% increase among hunger and poverty groups, compared to the previous year, according to data in the latest M+R Benchmarks Report, released today. Facebook Fundraisers accounted for more than 1.3% of online revenue.
Nonprofits that provided COVID relief, either directly or through advocacy, saw a 40% increase in online revenue compared to a 22% increase for those that did not do COVID work. The difference was driven by a surge in one-time giving to COVID response nonprofits. Those organizations reported a 41% increase in one-time revenue, while non-COVID response nonprofits saw one-time revenue rise by 21%. ....

Teacher Who Raised More Than $40,000 to Help People During Pandemic is Hit With $16,000 Tax Bill

Louis Goffinet had no clue that he would have to pay taxes on all of the money he raised through Facebook Fundraiser.
A teacher in Connecticut raised more than $40,000 for families affected by COVID-19, but now he’s paying for it – literally.  Louis Goffinet, 27, started a Facebook campaign to help families with food and rental assistance and was able to raise $41,000, through Facebook Fundraisers, but now he’s been hit with a tax bill of $16,000, CBS News reported.
After consulting with several tax professionals, the unanimous consensus seems to be that I am responsible for paying income tax on the funds I was able to raise through Facebook, Goffinet wrote in a Facebook post.  ....
