Gas pipeline owners in Australia are intently scrutinising the devastating ransomware attack that brought the United States’ biggest pipelines for petrol and diesel to a near-week-long standstill, with the intention of beefing up their already extensive cyber-security precautions and improving “plan B”-type fall-back measures.
Pipeline industry sources say operators already have extensive back-up measures and redundancies in place to try to ensure supply is maintained in the event of a cyber-attack, given the risk to critical infrastructure from malicious actors has been evident for many years. ....

Directors and executives are urging greater clarity on foreign investment rules, structural tax and workplace reform, and interim targets on climate change, as the top of their budget wish list to leverage the post-pandemic recovery.

Hangovers result from a classic human failing: we stop and think only when a problem arises, not when it’s caused. When times are good, we’ve always got room for one more, but come the morning and we’ll be wondering why we partied like there was no tomorrow.
Today, there’s plenty to drink in Australia. The rains are here, and the east and west coasts received prodigious downpours in spring. Times are good which means the last thing on our minds is a hangover.
But a little over a year ago, half the country was on fire, crops had failed and rivers were dry. At the time, the government said it couldn’t make it rain to fix the problem. Now that the rains are here, it’s time to prepare for the next catastrophic drought. But to do that we need to embrace water security as a core national security issue. ....
