'At a breaking point': Some B.C. hospitals at capacity as warnings grow

VANCOUVER
Frontline medical workers, administrators and others are painting a troubling picture of the state of B.C. hospitals, with some intensive care units full and contingency plans underway as staff struggle to keep up with incoming COVID-19 patients.
In Fraser Health alone, there are 229 COVID-19 patients, with 67 of them in ICU and high acuity units. Approximately half of them are at Surrey Memorial Hospital, and the health authority is operating at 96 per cent hospital capacity overall, with some hospitals at 100 per cent.
Five of the 60 operating rooms normally run by Fraser Health have been already closed so that staff could be diverted to COVID-19 care, according to Dr. Victoria Lee, president and CEO of the health authority. That s forced dozens of non-emergency surgeries to be postponed. ....

The recent directives by Quebecâs Minister of Health entitled âPrioritization for access to adult intensive care in the extreme context of a pandemicâ and the plans of some hospitals to implement them demonstrates the abandonment of the âGood Samaritanâ model of caring for all people regardless of their medical condition.
These directives limit access to Intensive Care Unit (ICU)/critical care beds when a âsurcharge of capacityâ of 150% to 200% is reached for ICU beds.
In Step 3 only those with a 70% or more chance of recovery are admitted to the ICU. Those longer than 21 days on a ventilator and not showing clinical signs of improvement are unplugged to die. ....

SCOTTISH independence is becoming inevitable, according to former BBC presenter Gavin Esler.
The ex-Newsnight host, who described himself as having a “strong Unionist inclination”, says the UK now seems destined to break up.
Citing Brexit, Boris Johnson’s leadership and media bias, the Scot explains in a column for the Mail on Sunday why he believes the Union is “sliding at a glacial pace into a constitutional crisis”.
Esler warns Scots are “scunnered” and “thrawn”, writing: “If a nation of five million people can be summed up in two words right now, it is these two. Most Scots are scunnered by events at Westminster since 2016, notably by Brexit and what they see as the incompetence of Boris Johnson and his Government.” ....
