Lockdown over the last year has left us in our houses, with the government’s ‘Stay At Home’ message ensuring we do not venture past our local area. Whilst the roadmap that Boris Johnson released on the 22 February provides some scope for optimism, it remains the case that we will remain in some form of lockdown for a little while longer. When are lives have been reduced to the communities around us, it may be worth taking the time to explore our local history, and understand how it has shaped our areas to what they are today. In the following article, I will outline a few of these little histories I found during lockdown, and why they are significant. ....

Cementing an historic link
The commemorative trowel, which has spent most of its life in a drawer, will now by on permanent display in the town hall. Pictured on the day it was handed over are Don Wilson and his wife Helen.
A Warkworth artefact has returned to the town after an absence of nearly 100 years.
The commemorative trowel has been in the Wilson family since Nathaniel Wilson used it to lay the Coronation Stone at the Warkworth Town Hall on June 22, 1911.
Last month, his great grandson, Don Wilson, 93, of Auckland, handed it over to hall manager Alex Hayward. “It’s quite amazing to see it returned,” Alex says. ....
