New Heroes Campaign Celebrating Community Violence Intervention Program Leaders – Amnesty International USA

Just days before Wear Orange Weekend 2021, Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) today announced the launch of the Heroes Campaign, a national advocacy effort to secure critical federal funding for community violence intervention programs. The campaign is AIUSA’s latest effort to bring attention to and to end gun violence that disproportionately affects Black and brown communities throughout the country. 
The campaign kicks off with a virtual  live panel discussion at 7:00 PM EST and features six leaders from grassroots violence prevention groups, “heroes” who work tirelessly on the front lines to save lives in their communities. These heroes will discuss how local organizations’ leaders continue to fight the erasure of Black and brown youth from the national conversation, and how proper funding from lawmakers can help curb violence in the most affected communities.  ....

Today, Amnesty International USA released the following statements to support President Joe Biden’s plan to announce several actions geared towards reducing gun violence. The actions include: 
Increasing available federal funding for community gun violence intervention programs through the American Jobs Plan, Medicaid funding, as well as through agencies such as the Department of Justice, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Education, Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Department of Labor;  
A proposed rule from the Department of Justice to help stop the proliferation of ghost guns;

Today, President Biden announced the American Jobs Plan, calling on Congress to pass a $12 billion investment in workers facing significant challenges. Part of this $12 billion investment includes $5 billion over eight years in support of evidence-based community violence prevention programs. In a statement, Ernest Coverson, the End Gun Violence Campaign Manager at Amnesty International USA, said: 
“We applaud President Biden’s historic decision to take a critical step toward ending gun violence, which affects numerous communities across the country. Supporting funding of community-based programs, represents a victory for Amnesty International USA and the many partner and front-line organizations that have been pushing for this type of action. This year the “Invest in Us” coalition came together with a goal to secure federal funding to address gun violence, and in less than a month, the Biden Administration listened.  ....

Amnesty International USA released the following statement after reports emerged of a mass shooting in Orange, California, which reportedly left four people dead and two others injured. The shooting occurred just hours after President Joe Biden allocated $5 billion out of his $12 billion American Jobs Plan to support evidence-based community violence prevention programs.
