The Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone C of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Wednesday said its officers intercepted 5,200 live ammunition and other contraband worth N1.3bilion in the last three months of 2021 in the South-South and South-East zones of the country.
In a press statement by the Public Relations Officer, FOU, Zone C, Jerry Attah and a copy made available to newsmen on Wednesday, the Customs Area Controller, Zone C, Compt. Yusuf Lawal said while N1.280billion were generated from seizures from contraband N7.6milion were raised as DN for cargoes that exited the seaports. ....

First Quarter Report: Goods Worth Over ₦1.2bn Seized In Imo

The Federal Operations Unit (Zone C) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has seized contraband items valued over ₦1.2 billion in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
Briefing journalists in the state on Wednesday, the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Yusuf Lawal, said the seizure was made from January to March.
The items which included foreign parboiled rice, frozen poultry products, drugs, second-hand clothing, live ammunition, soaps, exotic cars, were intercepted in states of the South-South and South-East, which covers Zone C.
“Following our anti-smuggling drives, between January to March 2021, we have intercepted various contraband within our areas of jurisdiction which covers South-South/South-East zones with a duty paid value of ₦1,280,885,011,” he said. ....

NCACC challenged by poor reporting, outdated IT systems

Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Defence (JSCD) has raised a number of concerns over the National Conventional Arms Control Committee (NCACC), including outdated IT systems, poor reporting and End User Certificates.
In a committee report dated 26 February, the JSCD said one of the challenges raised by both the Committee and the defence industry, is that the current IT system utilised by the NCACC to process applications appears to be outdated, not able to desegregate information in a holistic and user-friendly manner, as well as causing delays in processing applications.
“The NCACC acknowledges this shortcoming and indicated that they hope to migrate to a new system by early 2021. Armscor has also indicated that they can assist the Directorate for Conventional Arms Control (DCAC) to migrate to a more user-friendly and updated system.” ....

THE National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has upped its game since the agency’s leadership change, taking the fight against narcotics and illegal importations of controlled and contraband drugs and substances to a new pedestal.
The fresh impetus has not only given hope to Nigerians about government commitment to combat drug abuses, the agency has improved on its inter agency synergy, deploying due procedure in prosecuting its mandate, even as it continue to engage with sister agencies such as the Nigeria Customs Service in ensuring that the seizure of importation of offensive and illicit drugs at the ports are in line with the rules of engagement, contrary to prior erroneous and misleading reports. ....
