Ancient Coins Tell the Story of the Jewish People

Ancient Coins Tell the Story of the Jewish People
From the Roman conquest of Judea to the rebirth of Israel.
A couple of months ago I started reading James Michener’s
The Source for a third time. This time, the archaeological dig at the “tell of Makor” awakened in me my old love of coins and I began to think about what it would be like to actually hold an ancient Jewish coin in my hand.
I discovered that Jewish coins of antiquity were more accessible and less expensive than I had anticipated. So I started collecting. My collection is small but growing. I have in my possession three ancient Jewish coins: one from the First Jewish Revolt against Rome; one from the Bar Kochba Rebellion; and a widow’s mite (coined by the Hasmonean dynasty). When I hold these coins I feel a connection to the Jews of the past. ....

What Religion Was Jesus Christ? | Naija247news

by Stephanie SanHamel
In 1960, Norman Cousins, former editor of Saturday Review, wrote, “There is every reason for Judaism to lose its reluctance toward Jesus. His own towering spiritual presence is a projection of Judaism, not a repudiation of it.”1 Yet decades later, Jesus still remains an enigma – the Jewish man who claimed to be Messiah, Lord and God, resulting in billions of people following him and calling themselves Christians. So, what was Jesus’ religion? The simple answer is: Judaism. Jesus was a rabbi, a teacher of Judaism. He taught about the kingdom of God, he taught ethics, and at his final Passover meal he talked about a new covenant (alluding to Jeremiah 31:31–34), according to which God would write His laws onto the hearts and minds of His Jewish people. As the New Testament describes it, this takes place for those who come to understand who Jesus is: the promised Messiah who gave his life for our sins and rose from the dead. ....

Passover to Easter by William J. Tighe

by
William J. Tighe
For all Christians today who observe a “liturgical year,” the
high point of that year is the annual commemoration of Christ’s passion,
death, and resurrection at the end of Holy Week. Good Friday recalls to the
faithful the Lord’s suffering and death, and in most Christian traditions
is a day of ascetical practices, particularly fasting. Holy Saturday commemorates
his entombment and descent to hell, and thus is also a day of asceticism. Easter
Sunday, by contrast, is the joyous celebration of his resurrection, and of
the resurrection of mankind in him.
Despite these discrete “episodes,” however, most Christian churches ....
