Survey: 31% of people 60 and older have no close friends : The Asahi Shimbun

One in three individuals aged 60 or older does not have a close companion outside of the family, a ratio that underscores the gravity of loneliness among seniors, a survey showed.
The survey results were included in the Cabinet Office’s Annual Report on the Ageing Society that was released on June 11.
The International Comparison Study of Life and Attitude of the Elderly, conducted every five years since fiscal 1980, asks people 60 or older in Japan and three other nations about their life conditions and other topics. In the latest survey held in December and January, valid responses were collected from 1,367 people in Japan. ....

Design Age Institute launches suite of new initiatives

The Design Age Institute will celebrate its first anniversary with a suite of new projects and initiatives which seek to continue its mission of making later life better through design.
Launched in 2020 with funding from Research England, the institute is attached to the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design at the Royal College of Art (RCA). It was established to support the government’s Grand Challenge on an Ageing Society, with a mission to support age inclusive design through aspirational products and services.
To mark its first anniversary, the institute has announced the creation of two initiatives: the Design Age Directory and This Age Thing. ....

Ageing and Income: Financial Resources and Retirement in Nine OECD Countries 2001 is a landmark study of the material well-being of older people in Canada, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. It uses a wealth of new data to shed light on the challenges that face policy-makers as they anticipate the coming retirement of the baby-boom generation.
The findings are often surprising. In all the countries surveyed, policies have been fundamentally successful: older people at all income levels tend to maintain or even increase their material standards of living once they stop working. This happens despite large differences in approaches to public policy, including the size of public pensions.
