Award-winning comedian Ramy Youssef discussed the Muslim American experience and spirituality in his hit show “Ramy” at a Thursday virtual event.
The event, co-hosted by A&O Productions and Muslim-cultural Students Association, took place Thursday night over Zoom. Journalist and “Ramy” staff writer Maytha Alhassen moderated the conversation.
Youssef answered questions from audience members and delved into his experience producing “Ramy.” The show, which is streaming on Hulu, narrates the experiences of a Muslim-American family in New Jersey. The main character Ramy is based on Youssef’s life.
“I wanted to see a different kind of first-generation (or) second-generation (immigrant) story where it felt closer to my own life,” Youssef said. “I’m not trying to step away from my faith or my culture. A&O and McSA to host Ramy Youssef in virtual spring speaker event
A&O Productions and Northwestern’s Muslim-cultural Students Association announced Monday they will virtually host stand-up comedian and actor Ramy Youssef on April 22.
The spring speaker event, which will take place at 8 p.m. CST, will feature a conversation with Youssef moderated by Maytha Alhassen, journalist and staff writer on Youssef’s eponymous show, “Ramy.”
Youssef, an award-winning Egyptian American comedian, created, stars and produces “Ramy,” a Hulu show inspired by his own experiences as a Muslim individual in a New Jersey neighborhood.
The conversation will be followed by a question and answer session. Students will be able to submit questions and sign up for the event through a form set to be provided by A&O in the coming days. ....

Asian American groups release statement urging University support

Northwestern Asian American Pacific Islander Desi American groups released a letter urging the University to support its students beyond statements in the wake of the Atlanta shootings.
The Thursday letter, cosigned by Korean American Student Association, Chinese Students Association, Vietnamese Student Association, Kaibigan, Thai Student Association, Asian Pacific American Coalition, Muslim-cultural Students Association and South Asian Students Alliance, also denounced the University’s Feb. 23 statement, calling it “unhelpful and too forgiving of racism.”
“We need the University to do more than sending out an email,” students from Asian American affinity groups wrote. “We need actions that enact change.”
The University’s February statement said anti-Asian racism, Sinophobia and xenophobia have long been a part of American history. It directed NU community members to bias incident forms, bystander training and APIDA affinity groups among other res ....

Religious student groups find community in limited in-person gatherings
As COVID-19 restrictions loosen, some student religious groups are holding in-person events to welcome students to campus.
To recreate feelings of community, Catholic, Muslim and Jewish students on campus have been hosting a mix of religious and social events remotely or in-person.
Rabbi Jessica Lott said Northwestern Hillel has been building community by distributing Shabbat care packages to students. The feeling of community, Lott said, is an important part of Hillel and being Jewish.
Hillel President Tamar Jacobsohn said she appreciates the opportunity to connect with other Jewish students, especially incoming freshmen and sophomores. Jacobsohn said celebrating the High Holidays in September could have been “isolating” and “difficult” for some since many synagogues were closed.
