Free Palestine movement: Rockford Muslims show support for country

ROCKFORD A peaceful but spirited protest Thursday morning outside the Muslim Community Center and Mosque, 5921 Darlene Drive, featured prayers, chants and demands the U.S. government intervene to stop the latest round of violence between the Israeli and Palestinian people.
At least 200 people, some carrying signs reading “Boycott Israel” and “Stop the oppression,” gathered in the mosque parking lot to air their grievances.
“The purpose of today’s protest is showing our support for the innocent people of Palestine who were kicked out of their homes,” said Dr. Khalid Siddiqui, president of the Muslim Association of Greater Rockford. “That is a complete injustice to those people who have been living there for centuries. We have full support for those people and we ask the U.S. government to intervene and stop this kind of oppression.” ....

Rockford gets three new COVID testing sites.

ROCKFORD Three new free drive-thru COVID-19 testing sites are available in Rockford in an effort to improve access across the city.
In partnership with the Muslim Association of Greater Rockford and Islamic Circle of North America, O Hare Clinical Lab Services of Chicago opened the three testing facilities last week to ensure residents are served with fast and free COVID-19 testing results within 48 hours.
Insurance isn’t required and all are welcome, regardless of immigration status, said community organizer Mustafa Abdall.
He said he saw the need when one of the city’s two drive-thru COVID-19 testing sites closed in December. The site on Rockton Avenue, which was operated by Crusader Community Health, closed before Christmas. ....

Mustafa Abdall, 2020 Rockford Register Star Excalibur finalist

The Rockford Register Star’s Excalibur Award is given to an individual for community service and excellence and for making a difference in the Rock River Valley. The Excelsior Award goes to an organization for doing the same. Mustafa Abdall is an Excalibur finalist.

Occupation: Lincoln Middle School teacher
About the nominee: Mustafa Abdall teaches English as a second language and has been instrumental in helping hundreds of immigrants acclimate to life in Rockford. Earlier this year he was recognized as one of the Rockford Register Star s 2020 People to Watch.
Abdall also is founder of Winnebago Emerging Small Business Services, an organization that focuses on providing support to bilingual and multicultural entrepreneurs. In October, he and his business partner, Moe Allen, took ownership of Ronit s Kitchen, an Indoor City Market restaurant at 116 N. Madison St. and renamed it Guzel, which means beautiful in Turkish. ....
