Increment in tuition fee: LASU students wait on Sanwo-Olu for review -

THE management and students of the Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo, are now eagerly awaiting what the decision of the Visitor to the university, who is also the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will be on the issue of the recent increment in tuition fee from N25, 000 to N67, 000 per session.
The new fee regime will start with the new set of students that will come in from 2020/21 academic session. Stale students from those that will soon be in 200 level upward are exempted and will pay the old rate of N25,000 per session until they finish their programmes. ....

The Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Delta State University, Abraka branch, Monday Izu, who was last week abducted by gunmen while returning from an official assignment in Warri, has regained his freedom.
He was released alongside his driver after six days in captivity.
The abduction took place on the Eku-Abraka Road in the Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, where the gunmen lurked around a failed portion of the road.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Izu’s kidnappers established contact with his family on Saturday with his mobile phone. ....

N40 Billion Earned Allowances Released To ASUU

(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – President Muhammadu Buhari has waived the
‘no work, no pay’ Trade Act for striking university lecturers to allow peace to reign, Minister of Labour and Employment Dr. Chris Ngige, said at the weekend.
The government has released N40billion for the payment of earned academic allowances for varsity lecturers and earned allowances for non-academic staff.
Also, the government may release N30 billion revitalisation funds to varsities by the end of this month. Of the N40 billion, about N10 billion was voted for the payment of earned allowances of members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and technologists. ....

University Non-Teaching Staff to Begin Indefinite Strike February 5

Non-teaching staff of federal universities in the country have given the federal government up till February 5th to address their grievances or face an indefinite industrial action.
The notice to the government was read out to journalists yesterday by the leadership of Joint Action Committee of the union, led by SSANU President, Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary, Comrade Peter Adeyemi.
The non-teaching staff under the auspices of the Non Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) had earlier undertaken a three-day protest at all the universities in the country to draw government’s attention to their grievances. ....

Two abducted in Katsina, Delta as soldiers kill four kidnappers

Gunmen suspected to be bandits early Friday morning abducted the village head of Raddah community in the Charanchi Local Government Area of Katsina State, Alhaji Kabir Umar.
They also injured Umar’s younger brother identified as Aminu, who is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Katsina.
Residents told one of our correspondents that the gunmen stormed the community in large numbers around 2am and operated for hours.
One of them, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “They abducted our village head and wounded his younger brother on the thigh. They kept on shooting during the operation.” ....
