A look at the 1966 World Cup team Gareth Southgate's England look to emulate

Goalkeeper Banks won 73 England caps and made 628 club appearances in a 15-year career, winning the League Cup with both Leicester and Stoke. Banks is also remembered for his stunning save from Pele’s header in England’s 1970 World Cup clash with Brazil. After helping Stoke to the 1972 League Cup, Banks lost the sight in one eye in a car crash in October later that same year, which ultimately ended his professional career. He had a brief managerial stint with Telford. In 2016, Banks revealed he was battling kidney cancer for the second time. Banks, who had been Stoke president since 2000, died aged 81 in February 2019. ....

It Was 50 Years Ago Today

With it being the 50th anniversary of the Blues 1961/62 League Championship win, TWTD thought we d re-run our 2002 interview with John Elsworthy, who played at half-back in that great side.
John, who picked up First, Second and two Third Division South winner s medals with Town, talked about that memorable season, Sir Alf Ramsey and the club s only championship-winning team.
Sadly, John, who made 435 appearances and scored 53 times for Town between 1949 and 1964, passed away in May 2009, aged 77.
Last year [2000/01] the entire world seemed amazed as Town came from promoted no-hopers to UEFA Cup qualifiers. There were similar expectations back in the summer of 1961. How did that amazing season start? ....

Was there football pre-1992? – Part 2

John,
I think it was West Brom in the Cup, 1974, Big crowd too. They were Division 2 at the time.
We drew 0-0 and they beat us in the replay at the Hawthorns 1-0.
I think it might have been our first Sunday fixture, Lords Day Observance Act and all, and probably because of the Miners Strike as you say.

Hi Peter, [24] I once asked you for the word that signified one s pleasure at another s misfortune and you kindly provided me with a Germanic type word. I wrote it down on a piece of paper which I must have thrown away, I would be grateful if you could let me know what it is again, I m hoping to use it once again in the near future. I m pleased to learn that you consider my article enjoyable. ....
