Labor 'out coaled' in Upper Hunter

The government risked losing its majority and the pressure was on Labor to win Upper Hunter for the first time. Working-class voters in Muswellbrook and Singleton, in the centre of the electorate, had helped Labor build up its vote to nearly 30%, making the seat winnable.
However, Labor’s Jeff Drayton, a Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) official, failed to get traction on his strongly pro-coal platform, polling just over 21%.
The drop in Labor’s vote is comparable to the 13% won by anti-coal independents.
Kirsty O’Connell, supported by former Prime Minister now climate activist Malcolm Turnbull, polled 9% and Tracey Norman, former mayor of Dungog in the east of the electorate, won 4%. ....

Glencore's transition plan translates into nine new coal mines and expansions

27 April 2021
Later this week, shareholders in Glencore will vote on the company’s climate transition plan, otherwise known as a ‘Say on Climate’.
Glencore joins just a handful of other companies, including oil majors Royal Dutch Shell and Total, in giving its shareholders a vote this year.
In all likelihood, shareholders will vote in favour of Glencore’s climate strategy. It is an awkward situation: the first Say on Climate vote for a globally material emitter will likely rubber stamp plans for at least nine new or expanded coal mines in NSW and Queensland.
Glencore’s coal expansionism
Glencore, the world’s largest coal producer, placated climate-conscious investors in early 2019 by announcing a “cap” on coal production. It committed to limiting coal production to its 2019 production levels of 145 million tonnes per annum. ....

NSW IPC conditionally approves extension to Mangoola Mine

New South Wales’ Independent Planning Commission has approved with conditions an extension to an Upper Hunter coal mine.
Mangoola Coal Operations Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Glencore Coal, sought approval to establish a new open cut mining area to the north of existing operations at its Mangoola Mine, 20 km west of Muswelbrook.
An additional 52 million t of run-of-mine coal would be extracted over approximately 8 years, with operations to cease at the site in December 2030 – a 13-month extension to the company’s existing development consent.
The Department of Planning, Industry, & Environment finalised its whole-of-government assessment of the Mangooal Coal Continued Operations Project in January this year, which concluded the project was “approvable, subject to comprehensive conditions”; however, the commission is the consent authority for the state significant development application because the Department received more than 50 ‘unique’ p ....
