A driver failing to stop as a couple and their dog walk at a crosswalk at Sherman Avenue near the Mexican War Streets in the North Side on Thu., May 13, 2021. The green scape is so inviting, my father describes it as Pittsburgh’s Central Park. The long park from Brighton to Cedar with several names: West Park, Allegheny Commons, North Park I just call it Our Park, “our” being the North Siders who walk themselves, their kids, or their dogs on the tree-lined pathways capped at one end with the beautiful Lake Elizabeth and the other side with the relatively new fountain near Allegheny General Hospital. ....

Baird’s apartment building in North Oakland On Feb. 27, 2020, Daniel Baird and his roommates received a letter under their door. Costello Management had purchased the North Oakland building they lived in just two days earlier and was terminating their lease so that it could begin renovations. Baird and his roommates had until the end of March to leave.
“It was a very shitty feeling, to put it blatantly. It was, like, pretty stressful, you know?” says Baird, who had been completing his final semester at the University of Pittsburgh at the time.
While this kind of forced departure is not technically an eviction which requires a written notice and hearing it has similar destabilizing effects, both for the people and communities affected. ....

On Trains - Nassau Weekly

February 28, 2021
February 28, 2021
“One thing about trains: it doesn’t matter where they’re going. What matters is deciding to get on.”

There’s this park near my house. At least, the residents of Pittsburgh’s Mexican War Streets call it a park, affectionately if a little generously. It’s really just a moderately sized rectangle of unremarkable grass, bisected by a patchwork of cracking concrete paths, circumscribed by busy city streets. Right in the middle of the park, gutting it, sit these train tracks you can’t miss them. They’re these old, rusty things, and every now and then an old, rusty train comes along, hauling its coal or its scrap metal or whatever. It rattles its way along the tracks, an awful, cacophonous screech booming up from the rails, making it really hard to focus on your walk. ....

Randy Gilson found happiness in a garbage can.
It started with salvaging other people’s throwaways to transform into Christmas gifts for his siblings, then it evolved into cleaning up an old house and the drug-infested neighborhood it stood in.
What he created is Randyland, an iconic Pittsburgh landmark that attracts visitors from all over the world.
But the real icon is Gilson himself.
An eccentric folk artist, Gilson created a child-like art installation in his backyard and invited the world to experience it for free. A walk through his garden is a glimpse into his brain - an explosion of colors with subtle surprises. He added life and whimsy to everything there - walls, fences, sidewalks, and once-drab lawn ornaments, all reimagined into pieces of art. ....
