New state laws designed to protect patients from being hit with steep out-of-network medical bills may contribute to higher healthcare costs and premiums, some researchers warn.
Lawmakers and advocates who pushed for surprise billing laws say the measures have protected consumers from some of the most egregious bills, which can climb into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. But some researchers recently have raised alarms that doctors and other medical providers are leveraging state laws that rely on arbitration to increase in-network fees, thereby raising healthcare costs for everyone. ....

SANTA FE The New Mexico Human Services Department (NMHSD) is accepting nominations for the Primary Care Council until Friday, May 14, 2021.
In 
House Bill 67, enacted during the 2021 legislative session, the Council is designed to:
“Increase access to primary care, improve the quality of primary care services, lower the cost of primary care delivery, address the shortage of primary care providers and reduce overall health care costs” statewide.
“Given that more than 48 percent of New Mexicans receive one or more services from the Human Services Department, and now over 930,000 individuals are enrolled in Medicaid, primary care has never been more important to the state,” said NMHSD Secretary David Scrase, M.D. “We hope to build on the success of our expansion of training positions to identify the best methods for building a sustainable primary care workforce, so that every New M ....

The state of New Mexico begins today accepting nominations for the Primary Care Council until Friday, May 14, 2021 announced the Human Services Department. As outlined in House Bill 67 enacted during the 2021 legislative session, the Council is designed to:

Optum says it erroneously billed 249 people for COVID-19 vaccine
Optum accidentally charged 249 Medicare Advantage enrollees for the COVID-19 vaccine.
The New Mexico Superintendent of Insurance Office said that the UnitedHealth Group subsidiary accidentally charged enrollees $34 for the administration of the vaccine and $0.05 for the vaccine itself. An Optum spokesperson said the company is contacting anyone who was sent an invoice to tell them that they do not need to pay any fees associated with the coronavirus vaccine, and all members who have already paid the bill will receive a refund.
In a letter to the state on Jan. 29, Tim Godfrey, Optum s vice president of operations, said the error came from Change Healthcare, a revenue cycle management company that parent UnitedHealth Group acquired for $13 billion in January. Godfrey wrote that patients with and without insurance were charged for the vaccine. He said systems at Change Healthcare had been updated to reflect ....
