New tool finds best places to build wind farms to protect birds of prey

New tool finds best places to build wind farms to protect birds of prey

There’s a dark side to renewable energy: wind turbine blades kill birds and bats. Birds of prey such as eagles, buzzards and vultures are particularly vulnerable because they use the same wind resources that the turbines need to operate.
Last year, one study found that more than 800 birds had died between 2014 and 2018 after being struck at 20 wind farms in South Africa. Birds of prey comprised 36% of the carcasses. Between 2015 and 2019, 14 adult and five juvenile Verreaux’s eagles were reported killed by wind turbines.  ....

Computer modelling keeps eagles safe from wind turbines

Jan 6, 2021
The rapid uptake of wind energy globally offers hope of a transition towards sustainable renewable energy but it can also present a real threat to soaring birds of prey.
A new tool offers hope of a win-win solution that allows developers to rapidly identify the best locations for their wind turbines while minimising the risk of collision for one special bird of prey, the Verreaux’s Eagle.
The Verreaux’s Eagle is a charismatic bird of prey that is particularly vulnerable to fatal collisions with wind turbines whose outer blade tips spin at speeds of up to 290kph. It is unknown as to whether the eagles simply do not see the moving blades or do not perceive them as a threat but in South Africa a considerable number of eagles have already been killed at wind farms. ....

Finding space for both wind farms and eagles in South Africa

Energy generation around the world is shifting towards renewable sources in response to the climate emergency. The aim is that future energy will be clean, green and sustainable. Many developing countries are also simultaneously trying to increase energy security and expand energy access to rapidly growing populations. Wind energy is playing a leading role in delivering these objectives.
In South Africa there are at least 23 fully operational wind farms producing almost 2 gigawatts, and several more are about to come online. The country aims to produce around 14.4 gigawatts a year from wind by 2030, which would be around 20% of the country’s energy demand. This is good news in the battle to reduce carbon emissions and ensure a more consistent power supply. But these developments can have other less positive impacts which also need to be addressed. ....
