An investigation continues into the illegal sale of laughing gas for recreational use 10 March 2021 Nitrous oxide, or NOS, is a prescription medicine used for pain relief and anaesthesia but is illegally inhaled by those seeking a short burst of euphoria. It s banned for therapeutic use under the Medicines Act but can be found in some food products, like whipped cream. Medsafe Group Manager, Chris James, says it s illegal to sell any products containing the gas for the purpose of inhaling it.
