Student body president candidates talk importance of diversity at A&M

On Tuesday, Feb. 23, the Student Government Associationâs Diversity Commission and Matthew Gaines Society led a virtual town hall and diversity panel open for student body president candidates.
Candidates Natalie Parks and Charlie Frawley were present in the panel, along with a proxy for Josh Feldman. Feldman and candidates Blake Martin and Matt Ryan were not present, as they were attending a separate virtual debate addressing free speech.
The event was hosted by SGA Diversity Commissioner Lily Pieper, the commissionâs Vice President of Staff Tori Davis and Matthew Gaines Society President Erica Pauls. The questions for the panel portion of the event were submitted by students. ....

AUSTIN, Texas For decades, there s been a debate on Texas A&M s campus over the prominent statue of former Governor and Confederate general Lawrence Sullivan Ross.
In a report released by a diversity committee formed this summer, 75% of the 450 students and staff polled want the statue removed or moved. But the board of regents decided to delay the decision during a meeting on Monday. Instead, they formed another committee dedicated to finding new ways of representing the school s history on campus, including the Sul Ross statue. The regents also approved a new $25 million diversity initiative. ....

Student senate returns for spring semester

The Student Senate held their first meeting of the spring semester on Wednesday, Jan. 20, covering an outreach poll for the Matthew Gaines society and a resolution congratulating the Texas A&M football team for their victory in the Orange Bowl and their successful season.
The Matthew Gaines Society President Erica Pauls, alongside Student Senate diversity and inclusion chair Iman Ahmed, presented a resolution to conduct a university-wide student outreach poll that would allow the society to understand what percentage of the student body has knowledge of Senator Matthew Gaines and his contributions to the university.
âBasically what weâre trying to do with this resolution is weâre trying to have a question about the awareness about Matthew Gaines put into the election spring 2021 election survey just so we can get a good amount of people that know who Matthew Gaines is and what weâre working towards,â Pauls said. âWeâve done a lot of work ....

A&M unveils Matthew Gaines bus route

The route 36 bus, previously known as âCotton Bowl,â has officially been changed to honor the late Matthew Gaines â a Texas senator who promoted the creation of Texas A&M.
A&M Transportation Services announced this change in multiple tweets, the first of which occurred on Jan. 4. The tweet stated that the name change would be effective Jan. 5, and the route and bus stops would remain the same. Before this announcement, funding was also secured in the fall of 2020 to erect a statue of Matthew Gaines in the future.
Computer engineering junior Fawaz Syed serves as the student services chair in Student Senate and oversees student transportation among other duties. ....
