Gaines statue will be erected in the center of campus, near the new Student Services Building and the Memorial Student Center.
There will soon be a new stop on the Texas A&M campus tour. If all goes according to plan, the university will erect a statue of Matthew Gaines in front of the new Student Services Center in the middle of the College Station campus. Gaines was a former slave, then a state senator and, perhaps most importantly for A&M, one of the driving forces behind the land grant program that made institutions like A&M possible ....

COLLEGE STATION, Texas â Texas A&M students have long been advocating for a memorial of Texas Senator Matthew Gaines, an African American politician who advocated for racial justice in the 1800s, and who was instrumental in securing the land grant for what would become the Texas A&M campus in College Station.
