QUINCY On a sunny and windswept Saturday, Chris McCallum s friends and family gathered in a small park off East Squantum Street to organize a tribute to the beloved father of three sons. In between hugs and misty eyes, they handed out black and red ribbons, the colors of his alma mater North Quincy High School, to be hammered to utility poles along the causeway in the tight-knit Quincy community of Squantum. It has been two years since Chris McCallum, of Bridgewater, was killed. His family says he was struck by a fatal punch while trying to break up a fight less than a mile away outside of a concert at the American Legion Robert I. Nickerson post. He was 44. ....
Four-hundred-and-fifty years of local government in County Clare has been celebrated at glór with the launch of a new publication by Clare County Council. In 1570, one year after Elizabeth 1st oversaw the shiring of Thomond as a county, County Clare was established at a court of English law held in the sacristy of the Franciscan monastery in Ennis. ‘The Story of Clare and its People 1570-2020’ by Dr Matthew Potter and Dr John Treacy provides a detailed account of how the local administrators of County Clare have helped to shape the physical, social, political, cultural and religious life of Clare over the following 450 years. ....

An artwork of a secret meeting of Clare County Council taking place in a hay barn in Spancilhill during the height of the War of Independence adorns the book cover which focuses on the history of local government in County Clare. The painting was produced by Tomas O’Maoldomhnaigh. The book features a range of interesting and previously unheard of stories relating to local governance in Clare from the Ardnacrusha scheme and Shannon Airport to the Council’s management of the health service to the temporary abolition of Clare County Council in 1942. ....
