Ridgecrest mayor's parents visit council meeting

When the Ridgecrest City Council met on July 7, Mayor Eric Bruen introduced two special guests: his mother Lynda Frommer and stepfather Gary Frommer, who were visiting from Oregon.
Bruen said that because council meetings were closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic last December, his mother was not able to attend in person to see him sworn in as mayor.

In case you missed it, Ridgecrest now has a downtown historic district. Although not an official title from the state, the designation is a way to acknowledge the historic importance of a cluster of buildings on and around West Ridgecrest Boulevard.
The city approved the designation on April 21, then on June 12 made an official presentation to Tex Hoppus, president of the Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert.
[The district] is the living history of this community, said Mayor Eric Bruen, who presented the proclamation to Hoppus in a ceremony at the Historic USO Building. ....

Open house, historical district proclamation at Historical USO Sat

Saturday will be the date for two intertwined events.
The Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Historic USO Building, 230 W. Ridgecrest Blvd. The event is to celebrate a major effort recently completed by the society. Two Quonset-style Engine Houses that date from 1948 and 1950 and were the town’s first fire protection buildings are now ready to be viewed.
The Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert is the owner and steward of these historic buildings, and it has recently finished a major effort to repair and rehabilitate both of these treasures of Ridgecrest’s heritage, according to the group. ....

Ridgecrest-area residents wanting to engage with the city council on certain hot-button issues will finally have their say at a special town hall meeting next week.
The town hall scheduled for next week will cover topics ranging from post-pandemic concerns to quality of life issues, according to a revised agenda released by the city Wednesday.
Speaking up at a city council meeting can be a frustrating experience for some, because meeting rules prohibit long-form back and forth conversations between council members and the public.
Rules are different at a town hall, which allows for a freer conversational format. There is one kicker, though: no action can be taken at the town hall meeting itself. Issues would have to be brought back to a city council as action items before anything concrete could be done. ....
