Teen drowns at Lake Gardner in Amesbury
A Massachusetts teen has drowned in Amesbury’s Lake Gardner, Amesbury Police report.
It’s tragic to have something like this happen, and my thoughts are with the family and friends of the young man, Amesbury Mayor Kassandra Gove said. Our chiefs confirmed that a summertime water rescue hasn’t happened at Lake Gardner Beach in decades, though they are trained for them. I want to thank our police and fire departments for everything they did to try and save the boy.

AMESBURY – Earlier this month, Mayor Kassandra Gove learned she was named the American Planning Association’s Elected Official of the Year by the national organization’s Massachusetts chapter – a noteworthy accomplishment for a mayor who has served less than a year in office. 
The accomplishment might not have been possible without the assistance of one of her employees, Angela Cleveland, the city’s community and economic development director who is this year’s American Planning Association-Massachusetts chapter president. 
Cleveland nominated Gove for the award, telling a Daily News reporter that the mayor was worthy of the recognition based on her planning efforts in 2020.  ....

Amesbury schools return to remote learning until January

AMESBURY — The school district s five buildings will be closed to students for the rest of the calendar year after the School Committee voted 6-1 on Tuesday night to shift the district into a remote learning model until January.
Students will attend class remotely Thursday and Friday as well as Monday through Wednesday next week before beginning the winter break Dec. 24. In-person hybrid learning is scheduled to begin once again Jan. 4.
High-priority students will, however, attend class in person for the rest of the week. They will begin learning remotely with the rest of the students beginning Monday.
Acting Superintendent Elizabeth McAndrews said reduced staffing at Amesbury Middle School prompted her to move that school to a remote learning model Friday. ....

AMESBURY — Amesbury Middle School students will remain at home until next month and elementary and high school students will join them after the School Committee voted 6-1 on Tuesday night to switch to remote learning until Jan. 4.
Reduced staffing at the middle school prompted acting Superintendent Elizabeth McAndrews to shift students there back to remote learning on Friday.
McAndrews told the committee on Tuesday night that staffing remains a problem districtwide.
Committee members Peter Hoyt, Abigail Jurist Levy, Mel Webster, Maryann Welch, Elaine Bucher and Mayor Kassandra Gove voted to switch to remote learning while Kate Currie voted against the measure. ....
