Portsmouth Superintendent Zadravec falls short in bid for Amesbury job

PORTSMOUTH Though he again received high praise from school officials across state lines, Portsmouth Superintendent of Schools Steve Zadravec’s third known bid for a Massachusetts-based superintendent position has again fallen short.
Zadravec lost out on his run at becoming the next superintendent of Amesbury schools Thursday evening. Elizabeth McAndrews, who had been serving as the district’s acting superintendent since last fall, was unanimously appointed the district’s next superintendent by the Amesbury School Committee.
Frank Tiano, superintendent of Uxbridge Public Schools, also in Massachusetts, was Amesbury’s third finalist candidate.
The Portsmouth school district announced Friday, April 16 the city’s School Board and Zadravec agreed to a one-year contract that would keep him as the district’s superintendent until June 2022. The Portsmouth School Board unanimously approved the contract on Monday, April 19. ....

Portsmouth, NH Superintendent Steve Zadravec finalist in Amesbury, MA

PORTSMOUTH While he has agreed to a contract with the Portsmouth school district for one final school year in 2021-22, Superintendent Steve Zadravec’s job search for the coming school year is still active.
Zadravec has been named one of three finalists for the superintendent of Amesbury, Massachusetts, public schools, the third known time he has been a finalist for superintendent of a Massachusetts school district in 2021. Zadravec also sought superintendent positions in Reading and Andover, where he was a finalist but not selected.

The statement said Zadravec would continue exploring opportunities “that align with his personal and professional goals” and Portsmouth s School Board would begin its superintendent search “in earnest” in the fall. ....

On March 15, 2020, Gov. Charlie Baker closed all schools in the Commonwealth for three weeks, beginning Tuesday, March 17, until at least April 6, 2020. Weeks turned into months. That was almost one year ago, a year of Amesbury students attending school remotely or, at best, in the hybrid learning model.
Last spring the Amesbury Public Schools were in the remote learning model for all students, but in October and November they gradually switched into the hybrid learning model. By early December all Amesbury public schools were in the hybrid model.
Students participating in the hybrid model receive four days of live, synchronous instruction - two days in-person and two days remote. Wednesday is asynchronous for all learners. ....

Amesbury schools return to remote learning until January

AMESBURY â The school district s five buildings will be closed to students for the rest of the calendar year after the School Committee voted 6-1 on Tuesday night to shift the district into a remote learning model until January.
Students will attend class remotely Thursday and Friday as well as Monday through Wednesday next week beforeÂ beginning the winter break Dec. 24. In-person hybrid learning is scheduled to begin once again Jan. 4.
High-priority students will, however, attend class in person for the rest of the week. They will begin learning remotely with the rest of theÂ students beginning Monday.
Acting Superintendent Elizabeth McAndrews said reduced staffing atÂ AmesburyÂ Middle School prompted her to move that school to a remote learning model Friday. ....

AMESBURY â Amesbury Middle School students will remain at home until next month and elementary and high schoolÂ students will join them after the School Committee voted 6-1 on Tuesday night toÂ switchÂ to remote learning until Jan. 4.
Reduced staffing at the middle school prompted acting Superintendent Elizabeth McAndrews to shift students there back toÂ remote learning on Friday.
McAndrews told the committee on Tuesday night that staffing remains a problem districtwide.
Committee members Peter Hoyt, Abigail Jurist Levy, Mel Webster, Maryann Welch, Elaine Bucher and Mayor Kassandra Gove voted to switch to remote learning while Kate Currie voted against the measure. ....
