Ryan Herbert to be sworn in as Angola's new clerk-treasurer


Herbert’s appointment came at a Republican Party caucus necessary to fill the vacancy last Wednesday.
Herbert takes over following the resignation of Twitchell, who after 25 years as Angola’s clerk-treasurer has decided to retire midway through her current term, which expires in Dec. 31, 2023. Altogether, including her time as the clerk-treasurer for the town of Orland, Twitchell’s local government career spans almost four decades.
“Leaving local government service brings tears to my eyes because I have loved what I did for 39 years,” said Twitchell, who informed Angola’s City Council of her intent to retire this spring on March 26. “I am enormously proud of being a part of what the City of Angola has become — a stellar Midwest city. ....

Neighbors: Hickman reflects on 20 years as mayor


ANGOLA — A year and a half into his fifth and likely final term in office, Mayor Dick Hickman is celebrating the biggest milestone in his political career to date: 20 years in office.
“I never thought I’d be here this long, or that I’d end up loving this job as much as I do,” Hickman said during a wide-ranging 40-minute interview in his second-story office at Angola City Hall on March 12.
“In fact, being a Democrat in a Republican area, I didn’t figure I’d get reelected the first time.”
Hickman, 73, was sworn in as Angola’s 15th mayor on March 5, 2001, after the death of Mayor Edwin W. “Bill” Selman on Feb. 7, 2001. Selman, who was suffering from cancer, spent months grooming Hickman, then a park board member, for the position. ....
