Sylva ponders tax increase

Sales tax receipts are booming in Sylva and a newly completed property revaluation will bump real estate values by about 14.5 percent this year if tax rates stay the same, the town would expect to receive $345,000 more in the coming fiscal year than in the current year’s budget.
That increase equals 7.86 percent of the estimated general fund revenues for 2021-22, but three of the town’s five commissioners say they support an increase to the tax rate as well.  ....

After a fight, Pittsfield employee wins back use of city-owned vehicle


When he was interviewing in 2015 for a job with Pittsfield’s Building Maintenance Department, James Esoldi learned, to his delight, that he would be able to commute to work in a city-owned vehicle.
That long had been city policy, because as a project supervisor, Esoldi could get called to duty at any time from his home in North Adams. It saved Esoldi about $40 a week in commuting costs. In fact, being able to use the pickup truck played into his decision to take the job.
When the city abruptly halted Esoldi’s use of the pickup to commute in fall 2019, during a pitched mayoral election battle, it raised political questions. And it prompted Esoldi, a member of the Pittsfield Supervisory and Professional Employees Association, to seek relief through the state Department of Labor Relations. ....

Mayor Tyer Announces Her Re-Election Bid On Slater and Marjo


Mayor Linda M. Tyer joins Slater and Marjo in the Morning on the first Wednesday of every month on Live 95.9. This morning she spoke of her excitement of now being eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, being 55 years old and all.
