Rice University: At home with Shepherd School musicians: Instrument demos available online

The Shepherd School of Music’s annual Family Concert has been reimagined amid the COVID-19 pandemic as a series of interactive videos to teach children and their families about the joy of music.
Before the pandemic, the family-friendly event allowed attendees to meet students and see and hear their instruments up close, discover the variations in sound and personality of instrument families and learn about the science of acoustics. This year, in place of the concert, 15 Shepherd School students have prepared short video demonstrations of their woodwind, string, brass or percussion instruments.
Rachel Buchman, head of the Young Children’s Division of the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program, came up with the idea so families wouldn’t miss out. ....

Kiwanis online auction ends tonight

SHEPHERDSTOWN As concerns still exist over the potential spread of the coronavirus, the Shepherdstown Kiwanis Club has opted to once again host a virtual auction rather than the annual live event.
Traditionally, the club hosts a live Children’s Benefit Auction each May to support and encourage youth in a variety of organizations.
Fundraising efforts benefit the youth in the club’s sponsored leadership programs, which include the Circle K of Shepherd University, the Key Club of Jefferson High School, The Builders Club of Wildwood Middle School and the K-Kids of T.A. Lowery Elementary School. In addition, the club also supports such organizations as the Shepherdstown Day Care Center and the Jefferson County 4-H Associati ....

Ucross has announced the establishment of a new partnership with Rice University s Shepherd School of Music. An annual fellowship will award four weeks of Ucross residency time to accomplished artists and/or scholars in the field of music. This year, the inaugural fellowship will be given to two composers, who will each receive two-week residencies at Ucross: composer and doctoral student, Nicky Sohn, and Assistant Professor of Musicology at Rice University, Danielle Ward-Griffin. ....

Chamber Music Society of Utica presents the Neave Trio and WindSync

Enjoy the exhilarating music of world class artists as the Chamber Music Society of Utica (CMSU) presents the Neave Trio and WindSync in a virtual double-header concert available for streaming free of charge from 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, through 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31.
Neave Trio violin, cello and piano opens the concert with their exuberant performance of the complete “Four Seasons of Buenas Aires” by tango-master Astor Piazzolla. The wind quintet WindSync then presents music inspired by space travel and celestial bodies, including selections from the Golden Records that were included aboard both Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977.
