Rangers call in helicopter to rescue hiker


Over the Fourth of July weekend, forest rangers with the state Department of Environmental Conservation rescued an injured hiker at the Mount Colden Trap Dike, helped an injured hiker off Seward Mountain and put out a half-acre wildland fire in the town of Schroon.
Forest rangers used a helicopter, ropes and a stretcher to rescue an injured hiker from the Mount Colden Trap Dike in the High Peaks on the Fourth of July.
The female hiker, 59, of Greenwich, Conn., had fallen and suffered a lower leg injury. Two other climbers in her group going up the Trap Dike called the rangers. ....

ACT hosts open interview session to bring in more workers


ACT hosted an open interview event Thursday in hopes to hire more workers to adequately meet demands for the individuals it serves.
COLUMBIA- Alternative Community Training (ACT) hosted an open interview session Thursday with hopes to bring in more workers for its programs.
ACT has been involved in the mid-Missouri community for the past 46 years. It provides services to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The organization also offers day services programs, a career services department, residential services, an after school youth program and in-home services. 
ACT hosted an open interview event for people to apply to work and help organize the many services it provides.  ....

Anna Arnold Hedgeman 1899-1990 / Civil rights pioneer left Anoka, Hamline to make her mark


On a train to Mississippi in 1922, Anna Arnold Hedgeman first faced overt racism as jarring as the rumbling of the rails. From St. Paul to Chicago, she rode in the dining car open to both Black and white passengers. But when the train reached Cairo, Ill., the conductor moved her to the colored car behind the locomotive.
I was shocked by all the ugliness that is the South the Jim Crowism and segregation, she told Twin Cities audiences in 1950. And after working as executive director of a YWCA in Springfield, Ohio, she found the Midwest was not much better.
Born in Iowa in 1899, Anna Arnold moved to Anoka as a child, the oldest of six in the city s lone Black family. In 1922, after becoming Hamline University s first African American graduate, she launched a career as a civil rights and women s rights crusader working in the Truman administration, busting racial barriers in the New York mayor s Cabinet, playing a key role in the 1963 March on Washington and helping ....
