Members of the Union of Grinnell Student Dining Workers (UGSDW) have until May 21 to vote on whether the union should move forward with affiliating with United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE).
UE is an independent union – a union not associated with a larger organization – that operates on the national level, often referred to in short interchangeably as a national or international. Their operation is a “rank-and-file union” which emphasizes its members to be the force behind democracy in collective business. Member unions set polices of the larger UE and make all decisions on the local level as well.

Grinnell’s pizzeria Pagliai’s is teaming up with the Grinnell College’s Cultural Attaché Program to serve up some international flavors from Thailand, Brazil and India. In an event called Tastes of the World, Grinnellians had the chance to try some specialty pizza inspired by the tastes of Divyansh Singh `23, Carolina Novaes `23 or Sun Yuvachitti `24. Each student helped model a unique pizza after the cuisine from their home country through the partnership of the Cultural Attaché Program and Pagliai’s.
Although the program was slated to offer the pizzas through May 16, as of May 4 all have since sold out.

A faculty vote on May 4 will decide if the First-Year Experience (FYE) course will become a requirement for graduation at Grinnell College. But some students who’ve taken the course are questioning how useful it really is.
The course, directed towards first-year students, was created on a recommendation from the
residential learning task force, which is comprised of students, faculty, staff, alumni and trustees. The goal for the course was to have students gain a common language and understanding of topics ranging from identity to sexual respect.
The task force’s recommendation first resulted in staff members, such as Jordan Brooks in Intercultural Affairs and Adam Gilbert, a residence life coordinator (RLC), visiting five first-year tutorials to deliver class information sessions in the 2017-2018 academic year.

Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere. That’s the philosophy behind Grinnell’s new Cultural Capital for Children project, which started distributing bags of literature and art-making supplies to middle school students and select Mid-Iowa Community Action (
MICA) families back in January, and is now scheduled to continue through the summer.
Activity bags are the main component of the program led by the Grinnell College Museum of Art (GCMoA), Drake Community Library, Grinnell Educational Partnership, MICA and the Grinnell Middle School Tiger Pack program.
