LOXLEY, Alabama Loxley resident Mary Calhoun got a big surprise when family and friends gathered to celebrate her 106
th birthday on Saturday, April 10 at her home just off Jenkins Farm Road in Loxley.
“People came from everywhere,” said Calhoun, who officially turned 106 on Tuesday, April 13, “most of them I knew. There were even a few I didn’t know.” ....

Sally Austen’s career game wasn’t enough to keep Radnor’s season alive.
Austen scored a personal-high 14 points Wednesday night, but No. 10 Radnor suffered a 36-31 loss to No. 2 Harriton in the second round of the District 1 Class 5A tournament.
“Harriton made seven 3s tonight. It was a one-point game late, but then they hit two long balls, which were big shots,” coach Mark Jordan said. “Mary Calhoun hit three 3s for them. They went up 34-27, we made it 34-31. Couldn’t get closer. The girls battled. They fought hard and I’m really proud of them.”
Cierra Hopson added seven points and seven rebounds for Radnor. Calhoun led the way for Harriton with 11 points. ....

Harriett Joyce Chambers, 82, of Marshalltown, passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 2, 2021, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. In accordance with her wishes, cremation rites will be given and a memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 6th at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with burial to follow at the LeGrand Friends Cemetery. Public visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until service time. The family is requiring everyone in attendance to wear their mask and adhere to social distancing. Antioch divided over councilwoman’s outcry against police handling of her sons [East Bay Times]
Jan. 14 An Antioch councilwoman’s recent social media outcry against the aggressive way she says police police treated her sons unleashed a torrent of supportive and critical public comments at a City Council meeting Tuesday.
Although the council took no action, the comments elicited a promise to consider ordering police body and dashboard cameras.
Councilwoman Tamisha Torres-Walker, who is Black and represents District 1, took to Facebook in a tearful, profanity-laced video shortly after police stopped her 23-year-old and 13-year-old sons on Dec. 29 for riding off-road vehicles on city streets. She accused the officers of overreacting and trying to run over her 13-year-old son and later handcuffing him after her older son escaped. ....
